2006 Nike Literary Price Winner Announced

The winner of Poland’s most prestigious literary award, Nike, was awarded last week. The prize was given to Dorota Maslowska for her novel Paw Krolowej (”The Queen’s Peacock”). The work is currently not yet available in English.

Claudio Magris awarded Austria’s annual state prize

The Italian scholar, writer and translator Claudio Magris has been awarded Austria’s state literary prize for European literature. Magris, who has also been seen as a possible future Nobel Laureate, is best known for his works Danubio (”The Danube”, 1986) and Microcosmi (”Microcosmos”, 1997).

Magris is currently a professor of Modern Literature at the University of Trieste, where he has held that position since 1978.

European Strega prize in 2008

Organizers of the Strega prize, one of Italy’s most important literary awards, have announced a new version of the award, awarded yearly to the best in European literature. One of the aims is to encourage the translation of literary works from across the continent, with European Union funding available for the task. The prize will first be awarded next year, with the first round of voting taking place in February 2008. (Source: Ansa.it)
