Date: September 14, 2006 | Discussion: 2 Comments
News have been making rounds about a new American fiction award designed to discover new authors. The Sobol Award, which is open to all unpublished authors, has received special attention because of its enormous $100,000 prize. The entries this year should be sent before December 31, 2006, although the deadline may close earlier if the maximum number of submissions is received.
More information about the award can be found at the Sobol Award homepage

It is, indeed, somewhat sad to read that the Sobol Award didn’t make it through the first year.
In a sense it is not difficult to see why, though, as there simply are SO MANY literary awards these days, making it really tough for new awards to break through. Which, again, is sad considering that from a writer’s point of view there can never be too many awards that support you financially in a trade in which it is otherwise really difficult to make a living.

I am disheartened to hear of the lack of participation for the Sobol Award this year. May I say that I would like to compete for simple recognition and for the sake of having someone read my work as opposed to actual monetary compensation for something I thoroughly love to do.
Thank you for at least attempting to bring light to struggling writers who want to become something some day. As always, it is an unfortunate time when money dictates people’s interests in such things that should be considered honorable and admirable.
Thank you for your time,
Michael Reach
