Tokyo’s Kodansha Ltd. and the New York based Random House Inc. have announced a joint-venture with a literary prize called New Writers Award, which is to annually award a Japanese author who is deemed as potentially appealing to a worldwide audience.
First to be awarded next year (deadline for submissions is 31 March), the winner does not receive a cash prize, but instead has his or her work translated into English, and will receive 10% of the sales in Japan. Additionally, an advance of roughly $5,000 is offered.
For more details in English, see this Asahi article. For information in Japanese, head to the prize’s official website.
