Zadie Smith awarded 2006 Orange Prize for fiction

The 2006 Orange Prize for fiction has been given to Zadie Smith for her novel On Beauty. It is the first time Smith has won the award, but not her first time to be nominated: both of her previous novels, White Teeth (2001) and The Autograph Man (2003) having been shortlisted before. On Beauty was also shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize this year.
